De Pijp (Amsterdam)

This Saturday we went to the Pijp in Amsterdam.

From De Pijp

Initially a working class district built to ease the overpopulated Jordaan in the 19th century, today is a a melting pot of cultures and nationalities.

From De Pijp

Amsterdam's Quartier Latin, De Pijp is a lively bohemian district.

From De Pijp

Here we can find nice restaurants as the well known Bazar where we go quite often (once per month) to have dinner.

From De Pijp

A former synagoge, is nowadays a muslim restaurant.

From De Pijp

This is "Bizar Bazar vlees" (meat/carne): mixed grill kebab with lamb, chicken, spicy chicken sausage, turkey, adana (lamb) and fried chicken wings with rice, tomato sauce and salad, fried potatoes, yoghurt sauce with moesir.
In some ways, reminds me the Portuguese food which has many arabic influences.
Price per person, €14,50.

From De Pijp

Bazar is located in the well known Albert Cuypstraat where takes place the most famous market in Amsterdam.

From De Pijp

Each time we go there, we see this beautiful heron! :-)

De Pijp is also known by its pretty Sarphati Park.

From De Pijp

After our walk there, we found some books to sell by €1 next to this window.

From De Pijp

Do you remember the wonderful town of Bredevoort?

From De Pijp

It's the same situation. You choose the book you like and you leave the money in the post box.

In the next entries, I will share more photos of the restaurant and the park.

See you!! :-)

My "Mate" Experience

As you already know, a couple of weeks ago, I went to Zwolle to meet Aledys.
I didn't know she had prepared a big surprise for me: my first mate experience.

I asked her to tell you the whole story. ;-) The "bolds" are mine ;-)

The initial plan: a lazy day in Zwolle

From Zwolle

"A few days ago my friend Sandra came to Zwolle for a visit. The plan was to have a lazy lunch and walk around town a little. Since we were having a spell of nice weather with lots of sun and clear sky, I thought it would be a good idea to sit somewhere nice near the water in the city centre and have a bit of a picnic.

Sandra is always very receptive and enthusiastic about discovering traditions and habits from other parts of the world, so I came up with a little surprise for her. Before leaving the house, I boiled some water and poured it into a thermos flask I brought from Argentina. What surprise did I have in mind? Well, pouring Sandra some mates, of course!"

Mate: Argentina's national drink

(Aledys photo: some years ago in her first house in Zwolle)

"Mate (pronounced MAH-teh, stressing the first syllable, not the last as I see it written everywhere) is Argentina's national drink, but it is not just any drink, something you pour when you are thirsty and then forget about. Mate is for an Argentine his or her best friend when he or she is at home alone studying, working or relaxing. Preparing the mate, pouring it, holding the gourd in your hand, sipping it slowly - the whole ritual is comforting and it gives an immediate sense of well being that, originating in your brain, spreads then through your body."

Mate: a traditional social occasion
"But mate is the drink you serve when you are entertaining at home, always the first thing you offer and is accepted by your guests. Also, if you are off to spend the day at the beach or by the pool, the mate gear is the first thing that you want to pack and God may help you if, upon arriving at your destination, you discover you have forgotten to take it with you! You will be despised and blamed by your companions relentlessly - for about five whole minutes!"

Mate equipment

(Aledys photo: her gourd collection)

"Because mate is such an important part of our everyday lives back in Argentina, I thought that Sandra would be interested in tasting it and hearing all about it. In order to prepare and pour this infusion you need a bit of equipment: the thermos flask for the hot water, the yerba mate or dry leaves to be brewed some sugar, the gourd to pour it in (also called mate) and the metal filter straw. You can also add other herbs to the mate or even orange or lemon peel to give it a citrus flavour."

The mysterious leather case

From Zwolle

"Once I had collected and prepared all these elements, I had to put them somewhere to transport them safely. And that is when my mysterious magic leather case came in handy. In Argentina you can find special cases made for the sole purpose of carrying the mate implements, and last year during my holiday in Argentina, I bought a very nice one made from carpincho or capibara skin."

The moments before my first mate experience. No clue at all...

"When Sandra saw my fancy case, she immediately got curious but I was determined not to give away what was in it until the moment was right.
After lunch in "La Meridiana", an Italian restaurant on the Melkmarkt, opposite the Grote Kerk, we walked around and I took her to see the Zwolse Balletjeshuis, where they sell these special old fashioned sweets typical of Zwolle. Unfortunately the shop was closed, but we managed to find some balletjes in the Tourist Information Office or VVV right next to the Grote Kerk."

I don't take drugs. What is she doing?!
Preparing the mate, of course ;-)

"Finally, the moment to open the mysterious leather case arrived. We sat by the canal, I opened the case, took the thermos out -nothing odd there, maybe it was coffee? tea? spirits?- and then out came the tumbler containing the dry leaves of yerba mate and I started preparing the drink. First I took the special mate gourd, filled 3/4 of it with the yerba, then shook it a bit to bring the dust of the yerba to the top. Then I placed the metal filter straw to one side and I also added a pinch of peppermint leaves to give it more taste. Instead of sugar I normally use sweetener so I added some of that and then poured the hot water. The first mate is always for the cebador (the person pouring it) to make sure it is prepared correctly, so I had the first one and I made sure it was ok. Then, I poured again and passed it to Sandra. What did Sandra think of it?"

The Mate circles

"Well, I am sure that it tasted quite strange to her, probably! Drinking mate is an acquired taste and the first few sips or the first few rounds of mate will definitely taste a bit too strong and probably bitter but it gets better the more times you drink it. We, Argentines, start drinking it at an early age and some of us don't even get to really like it, but because it is usually done socially, we always join in the mate circles while spending time with friends or family."

Mate's health benefits

"I can go on and on talking about mate drinking since the ritual has its own etiquette and the manner of preparing and pouring it varies from region to region. It also has a number of health benefits, since it is an excellent antioxidant, protects the immune system and is an energy booster. I will definitely come back on the subject of mate drinking in future posts.
I am not sure what Sandra thought of those first sips of mate, but I do know that she was rather impressed with the ritual and the health benefits that yerba mate offers. So, can you guess what I am giving her for her birthday this year?"

(Aledys photo: some mate packs)

Oh! A cadeautje...:-)) Thank you, Aledys!
And yes, I liked to drink the mate very much! ;-)
Very refreshing in the Summer!

And you, dear readers? Have you heard about mate before? Have you already tasted it?

De Negen Straatjes

They are The Nine Little Streets where we can find the most cute and different stores in Amsterdam. They are the De Negen Straatjes (As Nove Ruazinhas).

De Negen Straatjes are...

De Negen Straatjes are nine side little streets located in the most fashionable Amsterdam district, the Jordaan, where we can find galleries, restaurants and speciality shops:antiques and curiosities, gifts and toys, interior and design, clothing and fashion, art and culture, music and hobbies, jewelry and acessories, fabric and haberdashery, bags, shoes and vintage clothings.

...and they are located in...

Happily situated in the Canal Belt (Grachtengordel), De Negen Straatjes offers the possibility to enjoy the most beautiful Amsterdam canals: the Herengracht or "Lords Canal", the Keizersgracht or "Emperor's Canal" and the Prinsengracht or "Princes Canal".

And the streets names are...

Most of the streets names are related with the historical activity of this district, the fur trade (comércio de peles).
Some examples are the Huidenstraat (Furs Street/Rua das Peles), Berenstraat (Beers Street/Rua dos Ursos), the Wolvenstraat
(Wolves Street/Rua dos Lobos) and the Reestraat (Roe Deers Street/Rua das Corças).

When in Amsterdam, I go...

Generally, when I go to Amsterdam, I usually walk nearby De Negen Straatjes, in the Singel canal. I lunch at Singel 404, I have my prayers in the stunning Saint Francis Church and sometimes I like to buy some flowers in the Bloemenmarket (the Flower Market).
I also like to pay a visit to the Book Market in the Spui and see all those pretty old books. Sometimes, I go to the American Book Center, located in the same square, if I wish to buy an English written book.
Finally, I enjoy to have a small walk in The Begijnhof, this pearl of silence in the middle of Amsterdam, and have an espresso at the Amsterdams Historisch Museum.

My first outing in De Negen Straatjes was... only two months ago.

So, believe it or not, I only went to the Negen Straatjes two months ago. I must say I don't go so often to Amsterdam, in spite of its proximity to Almere (about 25 minutes by train). The Netherlands are not only Amsterdam and I like to know other cities. But now, with my friend Raquel living there, I come more often, at least once per month. Last time, we went to the Rijksmuseum.
In January, I talked to Raquel about a walk in De Negen Straatjes. "Seems fine!" she said and we went there.
We took the tram to the Spui and we started our visit in the Wijde Heisteeg street.
At the number 7, I saw a vitrine that caught my attention and I told to Raquel I would like to enter there. They had bags and clothes on sale. I thought I didn't need to go elsewhere. I saw two bags and two blouses I would like to buy. Surprise, surprise, the store had no ATM. I could understand why: very good quality articles for very affordable prices.

De geldautomaat/ A caixa multibanco: differences between The Netherlands and Portugal

Generally, I only have € 20 in my pocket because I pay everything with the pinpas (cartão multibanco). However, when I took the train to Amsterdam, I had no money with me. So, when I arrived there, I searched for a geldautomaat (ATM/Caixa Multibanco) in the Centraal Station. I found an ING one and I clicked on "geld opnemen" (withdraw money/levantar dinheiro) and got my € 20 (I thought I would pay my shopping with the pinpas). However, ING is not my bank. ABN-AMRO is. If I needed to get more money from an ATM on that day, I only could do it in an ABN-AMRO ATM. Yes, a bit different from Portugal where we can withdraw money in the nearest available ATM .

I asked in the store for the nearest ATM and the gentleman said it was in the Albert Heijn supermarket near the Muntplein. "Could you, please, keep the articles until I come back from the ATM?' I asked. He said "Yes!" and we took the Singelgracht in direction to the Muntplein.

In the Netherlands, even in Amsterdam, we don't find so many ATM's as in the portuguese streets. So, we needed to walk a bit. Arriving there, we noticed the ATM was not a ABN-AMRO, but an ING. Then I remembered I couldn't get any money there. I asked to someone where was the nearest ABN-AMRO ATM and I got my answer: "Leidseplein!"
I thought "The store owner will assume I'm not coming back today!!!"
Finally, I got my money and I returned to the store. He was already displaying the things again. I apologized for my delay, explaining the situation.

Do you like the bags I've bought?

These are the Italian bags I bought for €25 each. They are made of leather. Do you think they were worth the effort?

I want and I need to come to this store again.

Other stores

We were a bit tired by then, but, nevertheless, we saw some other stores. One that I liked very much was Laura Dolls. Its Vintage Clothings are something else!!
Maybe next time I will buy something there. :-)

And you? What are your favourite stores in De Negen Straatjes?

Zwolse Balletjes

A couple of weeks ago, I went to Zwolle to meet Aledys. Zwolle is located in the province of the Overijssel.
This was my second visit to this charming and pretty city. I was there for the first time in May 2009, remember? :-)
During our walk, Aledys told me about...

Zwolse Balletjes,

From Coisas Minhas

a 19th century Dutch delicacy, typical from Zwolle.

I must say these candies are delicious!! Aledys, please, bring me a tin, in your next visit to Almere! Or two! Maybe it's better!
;-))

Aledys led me to the only store where they are sold, the Zwolle Balletjeshuis. However, it was their day off and I couldn't visit this cute traditional store.
But I peeked a bit through the window ;-) Lovely store! Oh, the tins!! Click here to see it! ;-)

We went to the Tourism Office and I bought a Zwolse Balletjes bag. Then I noticed there were rhymes written on the bag. It was a conversation between mother and son.

Bij Den Stekenbakker

Hier zijn balletjes in overvloed
Ma! mij dunkt, die koopman moet
Zich verwarren in de soort
Die bij elke bus behoort!

Says the child that in her opinion, there are so many balletjes in the store that the salesman should be confused with all of the sorts available, without knowing which belongs where.

Neen, mijn kind, zóó is 't niet.
Van de soorten die gij ziet
Weet hij steeds het onderscheid
Naam en Prijs en Qualiteit.

The mother replies that it isn't true because the salesman knows how to recognize them by the name, the price and the quality.

So cute, isn't it? :-))

Next time, I must visit this store and bring some tins! I only have more six balletjes...

Bring your pet with you

My cat in the backyard

From Coisas Minhas

We have a saying in Portuguese " Quem não tem cão, caça com gato" (He who has no dog, hunts with a cat), which means
you use whatever you have to achieve your goals, if you don't have what you are supposed to.
Look, for example, at my cat: it had no pillow to lay down its head, so it used the shelf to do it...;-)

My cat came with my mother by plane -in a KLM flight- on the first time she was here to visit us.

"What are the procedures in this situation?", you ask.

Fofinho needed a valid health certificate signed by a qualified vet. This certificate was issued eight days prior to departure.

Also the animal must be accompanied by a valid certificate stating that it has been inoculated for rabies at least 21 days before departure.

Pets travelling within the European Union must have a microchip and an official EU pet passport which should be issued by a qualified vet.

Only small cats and dogs up to 6 kg including travel bag or kennel can be taken into the cabin. Ours came in the special ventilated part of the aircraft. He is a bit fat.

PS:
Prepare yourself to spend around 250/300€ with everything:flight+health certificate+microship+ EU pet passport+ rabies vaccine+kennel
