Heavy Snowfall is expected this Friday morning
Take care out there!
Dutch rail (NS), Schiphol airport and motoring organisations are making preparations to cope with an expected heavy snowfall on Friday morning, according to media reports.Weather bureau Weeronline.nl is forecasting ‘total disruption’ during the morning rush hour and is advising motorists to stay home. The snow is forecast to start around midnight on Thursday night and will be heaviest in the west of the country in the early morning. Up to 12 cm of snow is expected over most of the country, except the far east and in Limburg. Strong winds are also expected to create drifting. The KNMI weather bureau on Thursday evening issued an extreme weather warning for all but the far north east of the country. It too expects snow of between 5 cm and 10 cm over much of the country with up to 20 cm in places.Saturday is forecast to be dry and sunny, but will remain below freezing. Saturday night will be as cold as -7 Celsius in places, the KNMI says.Overnight snow caused delays on the roads on Thursday morning and led NS to run fewer trains in some parts of the country.
Update:
The forecast heavy snow arrived later than expected in the Netherlands on Friday and there were few serious problems during the morning rush hour, according to media reports. The KNMI weather bureau has issued a code orange extreme weather warning for most of the Netherlands and the snow has been heaviest in southern and western parts of the country. The ANWB motoring organisation said drivers had moderated their speeds to take account of the weather. Rush hour also started earlier than normal as drivers tried to beat the forecast bad weather.Nevertheless, there were longer jams than usual, with traffic heaviest around Breda, Arnhem, Nijmegen, Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague, the ANWB said.Salt lorries had been out in force overnight and snow ploughs are on standby in Zeeland and round Alkmaar and Amsterdam. The snow is expected to continue until early afternoon, giving cover of five to 10 cm, and up to 15 cm in places.NS and SchipholDutch Rail (NS) reported no delays with morning services and has extra staff on standby to deal with problems. However, services have been reduced to offset the risk of major disruption and passengers are warned to expect crowded trains and longer journey times. At Schiphol airport, one in four Friday flights have already been cancelled and snow elsewhere in Europe is also having an impact on arrivals and departures, a spokesman said.Airline KLM on Thursday evening cancelled dozens of European flights as a precautionary measure. Travellers are advised to check with their airline for details.
Many people are working from their homes today. Here too. God bless internet! ;-) It's very cold outside and it's still snowing. A lot of work is expecting me later like cleaning the car and specially the paths in the front and in the back yards. Shopping was done last Wednesday, so we wouldn't have to go out today. Yesterday, I put the garbage outside and a couple of days ago, I went to the veterinary to buy enough medication and fluids for Fofinho. Do you know what I like to do when it is snowing? Ironing. At least, it's not so boring when we look outside through the window. ;-) Everything is brighter and not gray as usual.
