Gosto de ir a Haia

Gosto muito de ir até Haia e, de vez em quando, estou lá caída. Desde o início do ano, acho que já lá fui umas 5 vezes. A nossa embaixada é lá e o International Health Center também.

No nosso consulado, que funciona junto à embaixada, já estive 3 vezes desde o início do ano. Uma das funcionárias até já reparou que as minhas idas se dão à sexta-feira. "É a senhora que costuma vir às sextas-feiras, não é?";-) Muito atenta. Ganhou pontos...;-) Na primeira vez, fui pedir um passaporte novo (€ 75), pois o meu estava quase a expirar. Na segunda, fui, pela primeira vez, tratar do cartão de cidadão (€ 20) e na terceira, fui lá buscá-lo.

Fiquei a saber, quando lá cheguei, na minha primeira ida deste ano, que devia ter marcado previamente. Não sabia (dantes não era assim)... Mas foram simpáticos: pediram-me para aguardar que as pessoas com marcação fossem atendidas e, pelo menos, lá consegui tratar do passaporte. Menos mal.

Ir de Almere a Haia, ainda leva o seu tempo de comboio: entre 1h05 (se mudar em Leiden) a 1hh15 (o directo). Há que contar também com o autocarro de casa até à estação (15 minutos), o eléctrico entre os comboios e o consulado (10 minutos) e os 5 minutos a pé da paragem do eléctrico até lá e de casa até à paragem do autocarro. Na prática, conto sempre umas 3 horas e meia, no total.

Às vezes, é possível conjugar com as consultas no IHCH  (como a de Nutricionismo - foi o caso, o mês passado). Quando isto acontece, fico contente - quer dizer que consigo rentabilizar melhor o tempo e poupo nos custos dos transportes. Eu tenho o OV Chipkaart, que me dá 40% de desconto nas viagens, mas ainda assim, paga-se bem. Ida e volta, em segunda classe, de comboio, custa-me €17,40. No total, gasto à volta de € 25, por causa do autocarro e do eléctrico. O mês passado foi especialmente mais dispendioso, pois ainda tive duas consultas de Ginecologia. Por isso, sempre que posso e se não estiver muito frio, procuro conhecer mais um ponto na cidade, seja uma loja ou um novo cafezinho.

Na última ida ao consulado, fomos de carro (1h15 hora de viagem) e aproveitámos para ir a um café que gostamos muito e conhecer uma nova livraria que abria nesse dia (13/02). No próximo post, partilharei as fotos da livraria. É muito gira. Não percam! Haia vale mesmo muito a pena...Sempre.

My A-Z of the Netherlands: "V" is for Veterinary Costs

Due to my lack of time, I didn't have the opportunity to go forward with "My A-Z of the Netherlands" last year. As you may remember my last post about it dates from March. 

Therefore, I will try to make up to you this year. This time I will follow a different strategy: not writing according to the alphabet order, but according to the events that happen in my everyday life. 

I have written 3 posts until now : "A" is for Almere, "B" is for Bikes and "C" is for Children. This time, we will give a huge jump: "V" is for Veterinary Costs.

As you may know, my 16 years old cat has been ill with kidney and heart problems. This week, I went with him to the veterinary clinic. We were there for the last time in November and Dr K. was very pleased to see Fofinho again. She has asked me a couple of weeks ago to make a new appointment for Fofinho since she would like to check him up again and see how he has been doing.

Well, we have good news! For the first time, since Fofinho got ill last July, he hasn't lost any weight. In fact, he has more 50 gr and now he weighs 2700 kg. His heart is more relaxed too. Only his blood pressure needs to slow down a bit. Dr K. was very happy to see how Fofinho looked more active and stable. She said to me it would not be necessary to repeat the blood tests for now , but it would be advisable to do it in June.

Now, that Fofinho is better and I'm more relaxed with this situation, I would like to share with you some useful information related to the overall veterinary costs: doctor's appointments, medication, exams, treatments and food. Many of our readers are from Portugal and, as we know, emigration has been increasing in our country. So, if you are Portuguese, you are thinking about emigrating to the Netherlands and you would like to bring your cat with you, I hope this information will give you an idea about the overall veterinary costs.

This is only my experience. I don't know if the costs are more or less the same in other Dutch cities/provinces, but you can compare this information with the costs  that you have in Portugal and decide what is the better option for you - to bring your pet with you or to let him with your relatives (temporarily or not).

Fofinho's Veterinary Costs

(The current VAT for appointments, exams, treatments and pets food is 21%, but until last September was 19%. The medication's VAT is still 6%)

Check-up (last appointment): € 38.50

Evening appointment (July 2012): € 65

Medication

For the blood pressure: Norvasc (€5.25) + suspendeergel 30 ml (€4.60) + syringe (€0.30) = € 10.15

He has been taking 1 ml /day. That means each small bottle (this medication is prepared by the vet) is for 30 days. But now his vet told me to give him 1.25 ml /day.

For the heart: Atenolol  € 10.40 (each 40 days)

For the kidneys: Benakor € 16.90

The fluids for the kidneys: 4 units of Lactetrol 500 ml  (€33.40) + 8 needles (€1.95) + infuussystem (€5.70) = € 41.05

We need to give him 120 ml every time. Lately, Fofinho is receiving fluids once a week, but during the last 5 months, he received fluids 4 times a week, that means 4 bottles/month (each one has 500 ml). Now, one bottle is enough for one month.

The laxative: Laxactrat  €13.40

I give him 3 ml /day, and only if he needs it. In the beginning, I used to give 15 ml/day because he weighed more.

Total cost/month (last January): € 76.10 (because Fofinho is now taking only one bottle of fluids per month)

Exams

Bloeddrukmeting (blood pressure measure): € 27.55 (last January)

Urine kit:  €19.40

Geriatric tests (urine and blood tests, included the thyroxine values): € 83.15

Ultrasound:  € 142.37

Except for the ultrasound, all the other tests were done more than once.

Treatments

Fluids administration by the veterinary: € 13.10
(since September the fluids are being given by us)

Giving an injection: € 7.75
(and then you must add the cost of the product given in the injection)

Microlax: € 7.25

Versifel RC (vaccine given once a year): € 58.80

Fofinho's 3 hours stay in the veterinary clinic: € 41.35


Hygiene 

Vet Aquadent 500 ml: € 19.85

I put 2 ml/day in the water.

Comb: € 5.00

Food

k/d kat can 156gr (1 unit of wet food): € 2.37

I buy 4 units/month. The vet advised me to avoid wet food because of Fofinho's teeth. I give him a tea spoon every afternoon as a snack and that's all.

k/d kat 1,5 kg (dry food): € 19.25

Enough for a month.

Total costs (last January): € 28.73

Costs evaluation:

January's total cost: € 170.80 (doctor's appointment and blood pressure measure included).
Expected cost this month: € 104.83 (without the doctor's appointment and the blood pressure measure).

I hope this information will help you. Nevertheless, check always with your veterinary the possibility of a health insurance for your pet - especially if he/she is young - and the extras associated with (like dental treatment, for example). Thanks, Teresa, for the tip!. ;-)

Learning Dutch (6): Taxes (1)

A month after our arrival in The Netherlands, we received a letter from Tricijn.
I understood it was something related with taxes [belasting].The amount [bedrag] was quite high. As I was not familiar with the taxes in the Netherlands, I knocked at my neighbours door to ask Bas about it. He explained to me what kind of taxes we were talking about and then I went home to translate the letter.

Let's see this year's letter, it's easier...;-)

After confirming my aanslagnummer [fiscal number/número fiscal] and my address through the betreft object [referente a/refering to], I checked all the main points of the Aanslagbiljet [tax statement/folha de impostos]:

dagtekening [date/data]: 25.01.2011
heffingperiode [refering period/período a que diz respeito]:01.01.2011 t/m 31.12.2011
belastingjaar [fiscal year/ano fiscal]: 2011
vervaldatum [payment deadline/data limite de vencimento]: 25.03.2011

We have two months to betalen [to pay/pagar]. In our case, a bedrag [an amount/total] of €254,94.

How did they come to this value? By a berekening [calculation/cálculo] that I shall explain now.

In fact, we are paying two taxes: the watersysteemheffing ingezetenen and the Zuiveringsheffing.

1.The watersysteemheffing ingezetenen

As far as I understood, this one is related to the dijken [dams/diques] maintenance and repairs to avoid overstromingen [floods/inundações] and keep the zeespiegel [sea level/nível do mar] or the waterpeil [water level/nível da água] at safe levels.

For this one, we pay €73,53.

I'm sharing this with you because in Portugal we don't have this specific tax and if you are thinking about moving here it's useful to be aware of this.

2.The Zuiveringsheffing

This one is similar to our taxa de saneamento básico [sanitary taxes].
Zuivering means "purification" or "purificação".
This tax is to take care of the afvalwater [waste waters/águas residuais] and the riolen [sewers/esgotos].
If there is only one person in the household, we pay €60,47.
If there are 2 or more persons in the household, we pay 3 bedrag per vervuilingseenheid [unitary pollution cost/custo unitário de poluição]. The total is €181,41. It's our case.

That means that the bedrag van de aanslag, or the total amount, is €254,94.

During this period, we are more careful with our expenses, but we don't mind. In our opinion, the taxes are well spent.

Expat Life: Visiting Museums with the Museumkaart

This museum, situated in a beautiful medieval monastery, is the place par excellence of the Christianity in the Netherlands.

Here we can find richly illuminated manuscripts, jewelled book bindings, richly decorated images, unique paintings, altar pieces, ecclesiastical vestments and artefacts of gold and silver.

I was there and I remembered this. ;-) that you can see in our Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga.

Back to Utrecht...

To visit the museum, we used the Museumkaart.

The adults (volwassenen) pay 39,95 euro per year and the children (jongeren) pay 19,95 euro. We can buy it in the museums.

This year, I've already visited these museums for free :

Spoorwegmuseum in Utrecht (14,50 euro),

Zuiderzeemuseum in Enkhuizen (14 euro).

And these I've visited with a very good discount:

Mauritshuis in Den Haag (12 euro). I paid only 1,50 euro!!

Museum Catharijneconvent in Utrecht (11,50 euro). I paid only 2,50!!

I want to see more museums this year... ;-)
I think it's a good ideia to buy Museumkaart when you are visiting Netherlands and intend to see several museums. ;-)

Há dias, abriu aqui na rua, um novo salão de beleza que deixou um folheto nas caixas de correio.Uma folha A4 escrita nos dois lados. Para variar, pensei em traduzi-la e ver os preços com mais calma, comparando-os com os do salão onde costumo ir.

Eu estou muito satisfeita com o trabalho das minhas actuais esteticista e cabeleireira, mas cada vez que vou ao salão e olho para a lista de preços não percebo o que está lá escrito. E também não tenho tido tempo para traduções por causa das pinturas cá de casa e outras coisas.

Esta é a lista de preços para passar a roupa a ferro que me foi dada por uma senhora recomendada pela minha esteticista holandesa.
Anteriormente, o meu marido tinha consultado as páginas amarelas de Almere e só encontrou dois anúncios (numa terra de quase 180 000 habitantes!!!).

Depois, fomos a diversas lavandarias para saber se poderíamos colocar a roupa semanal para passar ao ferro. A resposta foi "desde que fosse lavada lá".
Ora, nós só recorremos a lavandarias para lavar peças mais especiais.
Em Portugal, nunca recorremos a serviços de engomadoria.
Sempre tratei das nossas roupas, sendo que o meu marido passava a ferro as respectivas camisas e a minha mãe de vez em quando, ajudava-me com os lençóis.
De resto, eu fazia tudo.

Por isso, não faço a mínima ideia dos preços praticados em Portugal.
E quanto a estes, para o padrão holandês, não sei se são caros ou baratos.
Mas parece-me justo, a avaliar pelas dores de costas, rins e pernas com que fico quando passo a ferro...

Esta semana, experimentámos os serviços e a roupa veio impecavelmente passada e entregue no dia e à hora combinada.
Eu só entreguei lençóis,t-shirts de manga curta e manga comprida e pullovers de lã.O resto nós passamos.

Traduzi a lista com a ajuda do dicionário.

Dutch Living Costs

Arrendamento de casa:

No início do contrato de arrendamento, pagamos três rendas e não duas como em Portugal. A terceira renda é para pagar à imobiliária.
Não é necessário apresentar IRS e fiador, só contrato de trabalho. Não é permitido arrendar casa acima de um terço do salário.

Parqueamento:

O estacionamento é muito caro: seis euros à hora.
Nós temos cartão de residente, mas ao contrário de Portugal, não temos estacionamento gratuito. O custo do lugar de estacionamento é de noventa e oito euros por ano.
No caso de parqueamento coberto, o valor é de quatrocentos e oitenta euros por ano.
Há muitos parques de estacionamento na cidade, logo mais segurança nas estradas e ar mais puro.

Seguros de Saúde:

Os seguros de saúde são obrigatórios e são pagos por nós. São duzentos e cinquenta euros por mês (com dentista incluído) entre nós os dois. A nossa seguradora é a “AGIS”.

Passes:

Os passes são ao preço real. O passe semanal de comboio custa cinquenta euros e o mensal custa cento e cinquenta euros. Geralmente, a entidade empregadora financia o passe.

IVA:

É menor que em Portugal;

Café: 1€70;

Cinema: 9€;

Casas de Banho Públicas: 50 cêntimos;
