a 19th century Dutch delicacy, typical from Zwolle.
I must say these candies are delicious!! Aledys, please, bring me a tin, in your next visit to Almere! Or two! Maybe it's better!

Aledys led me to the only store where they are sold, the Zwolle Balletjeshuis. However, it was their day off and I couldn't visit this cute traditional store.
But I peeked a bit through the window ;-) Lovely store! Oh, the tins!! Click here to see it! ;-)
We went to the Tourism Office and I bought a Zwolse Balletjes bag. Then I noticed there were rhymes written on the bag. It was a conversation between mother and son.

Hier zijn balletjes in overvloed
Ma! mij dunkt, die koopman moet
Zich verwarren in de soort
Die bij elke bus behoort!
Says the child that in her opinion, there are so many balletjes in the store that the salesman should be confused with all of the sorts available, without knowing which belongs where.
Neen, mijn kind, zóó is 't niet.
Van de soorten die gij ziet
Weet hij steeds het onderscheid
Naam en Prijs en Qualiteit.
The mother replies that it isn't true because the salesman knows how to recognize them by the name, the price and the quality.
So cute, isn't it? :-))
Next time, I must visit this store and bring some tins! I only have more six balletjes...
