The Sarphati Park

As I promised, the Sarphati Park photos. Enjoy!! :-)

From De Pijp

Located in De Pijp, this park is named after the Jewish doctor and philanthropist Samuel Sarphati (1813-1866).

From De Pijp

Sarphati's ancestors were Portuguese Sephardi Jews who arrived in the Netherlands in the 17th century.

From De Pijp

He worked as a doctor in Amsterdam, after studying Medicine in Leiden.

From De Pijp

Sarphati became a philantropist when he realised the bad hygiene conditions among the poor in Amsterdam.

From De Pijp

He became responsible for several projects to improve the quality of life in the city and the health of its inhabitants.

From De Pijp

Public health, education, industrialization and city planning were his main interests.

From De Pijp

The Palace of National Industry, the InterContinental Amstel Amsterdam (Amstel Hotel), a bread factory which produced more affordable bread for the poor and the city's refuse collection service are among his most known projects.

Have a nice week! :-)
