A Portuguese mother in the Netherlands

Her name is Teresa. She is Portuguese, born in Lisbon and raised in the south margin of Tagus river, a beautiful area of Atlantic beaches, old villages, palaces and castles, tasty food and good wines. Now, she is living here, in the Netherlands, where she and her Portuguese husband work. She began to write her blog last March, after becoming pregnant. Teresa, her husband and their son David, born last October, and the two family's cats, are the Fabulous Five whose history you can follow in Os 5 na Holanda.
I like her blog very much. She is funny, has a very good sense of humor, subtle and provocative, her writing is light in the form and deep in the content. By reading her blog, we follow the journey of a woman in a very different country from her own, without family and old friends around, who became pregnant and has to deal with different pregnancy care traditions and habits.
Teresa takes us on a special journey. I recommend to all the women who are expats or want to be, or simply have curiosity for other cultures, to read her blog. Teresa's blog is written in Portuguese.
These are the links to some useful and interesting entries:

Besides that, you'll get to know what David likes ;-)

Presepio featured in the Blog "A Touch of Dutch"

Presepio is being featured in the Blog "A Touch of Dutch", one of the most respected blogs about Netherlands and Expat Life.

Thanks, Isabella!

Isabella sent me the questions below. I could refuse some of them if I wished. I decided to answer them all. It was a good moment, after two and a half years living here, to look back and remember how I felt the cultural shock.

From Gouda Kaarsjesavond 2009

Where are you from originally?

What city do you live in currently?

What brought you to the Netherlands?

What inspired you to begin your blog?

When you first arrived in the Netherlands, what were the biggest differences you noticed from your own culture?

If you'd like to share, name 1-3 pieces of advice to anyone who comes from the same country as you to the Netherlands (eg: what to bring, cuisine and other funny differences, tips, etc...)

Name at least one of your favorite things about the Dutch culture.

From Texel

Name at least one of your least favorite things about the Dutch culture.

Has family or friends come to visit you since you have been in the Netherlands?

What do you like best about the city where you currently live?

Where would you suggest to someone else (from your native country) to search/shop for the same (ingredients for making) traditional foods and/or to buy decoration for the special occasions/holidays?

With learning Dutch, what do you find to be the most difficult: Reading, writing, listening or speaking?

Award " Amigo de Portugal"

10 June: Day of Camões, Portugal, and the Portuguese Communities

Luiz Vaz de Camoes wrote the Os Lusíadas, Portugal's national epic poem that celebrates Portuguese History and its achievements.
He died on June the 10th of 1580. That's why we celebrate our National Day on this day, June the 10th.
Portuguese immigrants throughout the world celebrate this holiday too.

I think the best way to celebrate it in Presepio is trough a special award to some amazing blogs about our History and Culture.
I called this award "Amigo de Portugal" that means "Portugal Friend".
;-)

From Selos Presepio

And this award goes to... ;-)

Familia Real Portuguesa (author: Maria de Menezes)

A blog about the Portuguese Royal Family (the Dukes of Braganca) where we can learn about the role that this Family had and have in our History. If you want to know more about Portuguese History, it is a good place to visit.

Ruas de Lisboa com alguma Historia (author: Agostinho Paiva Sobreira)

A blog where we can learn about the History of the streets of Lisbon (Lisboa) and see old and new photos. The right site to visit if you want to know more about our capital...

Memorias de Sacavem (author: Isabel Tiago)

A very special blog about Sacavem ceramics. Sacavem is nearby Lisbon and its ceramics factory was very well known.

Strawberries com Natas (author: Luisa Moreira)

A great blog about portuguese gastronomy with a very ecological message. ;-) Muito bom! ;-)

FELIZ DIA DE PORTUGAL!!!

Lovely and Loyal Award

Lopa, an Indian expat and the writer of the Blog Life as it goes on, gave this beautiful award with a very interesting challenge to Presepio.
Thank you so much, Lopa ;-) Very sweet of you ;-)

From Selos Web Atribuídos

I must answer to these questions:

1. Say why you made your blog and if you expected it to be popular at all.

I began to write Presepio to help me in this new adventure. So much new information, so many differences...
I needed to organize and place myself in this new picture.
I wanted also to share experiences and help others who, like me, were searching information about the Netherlands before taking the great step. Stories in the first person, not only the official data...
I tought also that it would be a good way to know other expats from different coutries and backgrounds. A good way of making friends in the same situation.
I had no blogging experience when I began to write Presepio, so I wasn't expecting a great popularity.
I don't think Presepio is that popular. I prefer that Presepio grows slowly and with some quality. I blog to relax and for fun. No stress, no worries. Let's enjoy the moment ;-)

2. State the exact date you started your blog.

I started my blog in 3 March 2008, about 4 months after my arrival in the Netherlands (04.12.2007).

3. Nominate 5 loyal followers!

Well, I will nominate 7, but I know there are more. I don't want to be unfair, so I will nominate by the nummer of comments:

Anita from Castles, Crowns and Cottages.

Aledys from From Argentina to the Netherlands, for Love!

Margarida Elias from Memorias e Imagens

Rosa Martins from Rosa do Adro

Isabella from A Touch of Dutch

Arwa from Oranjesplaash

Anita from Greetings from Holland

So girls, now it is your turn ;-) Do you want to tell your story? The rules you already know...:-)

To all the readers of Presepio:

Don't forget to visit Lopa's blogs. This woman is a mix of talents :-) Give her a visit and find out why ;-)

A great Sunday to you all ;-)

Orangesplaash

Utrecht, 4 de Fevereiro de 2010

From rehello

Half way between Rotterdam and Almere, I had my first meeting with a blogger friend: Arwa, an Indian Expat, living in Rotterdam and the author of the blog Orangesplaash :-)

A lovely meeting, I must say ;-)

We had a stroll in the historic center of the city. The beautiful photos are from Arwa ;-) I forgot my camera at home, do you believe that?!!! Such an important occasion and I forgot my camera...oh, dear...

From rehello

Arwa was very sweet ;-) We agree that she could take me fotos without publish them on her blog. I'm a very discrete person and I want to keep my privacy, without people recognizing me in the street, " Oh, Sandra from Presepio, bla, bla"....I'm a shy person and I don't feel confortable with it. She understood perfectly, very sweet ;-)

I must say when I started this blog, I never taught I would meet someone by the internet. It was my first blog and I hadn't any kind of experience of social networks. Email and research on the internet were my previous experiences in the World Wide Web, nothing more...

Nowadays, I feel more confortable to meet people by internet, from other countries, with a different mindset, with whom I can share expat experiences ;-)

Arwa is a recent follower of Presepio and since the beginning I like her positive and cheerful comments :-)

When we met, we talked about several issues, and once again, I liked her non- judgemental attitude and her respect for each one choices. Heel goed!

I wanted to write this post sooner, but I was very tired, and special posts, I don't like to write in a hurry way ;-)

Arwa, thank's again for our meeting in Utrecht ...and to save my files ;-) Dank u wel!

(Her blog has got very useful information about expat life ;-) I think you will like it...;-)

Beijinhos para ti, Arwa ;-)

7 Beautiful Things about Nederlands

Isabella, an american expat living in the Netherlands and the writer of the Blog A Touch of Dutch, has nominated Presépio for the award " Beautiful Blogger".

From Selos Web Atribuídos

I will follow her example and nominate 7 things that I find beautiful in the Netherlands.

1. Postcards

From Coisas Minhas

As you already know, I am a huge fan of Dutch Postcards.

In my country, there isn't such a variety :-(
Sending postcards isn't so usual anymore ...

2. Sinterklaas

From Sinterklaas (II)

This photo is from 2008, when Sinterklaas arrived here in Almere. I like these festivities very much, specially the simplicity of the gifts, the children's joy, the clothes, the songs, the presents boat, Sinterklaas's horse, everything...
You can see here how I lived this occasion.

In Portugal, there is a great pressure to give expensive gifts to the children during Christmas time. I don't like that, I'm sorry. I prefer the simplicity of Sinterklaas. I think Christmas is simplicity too ;-) so, why give so many and expensive gifts, even when the families cannot afford it? I prefer the simple joy of the season...

3. Achtertuin

From Almere (II)

I like my achtertuin.
It is gezellig (agradável) enjoying the sun, specially with friends, during a nice barbecue! Simple and cozy!

Last December... the view of my living room ;-) Love it! Very relaxing!

4. Bredevoort (de boekenstad).

From Bredevoort - Gondelvaart 2009

The town where I find out the concept of Honesty Bookshop.
Please, click on the link to know more about it ;-) A must go! At least for me, because I like to read very much.

5. Efteling

From Efteling

It was a magical experience! A Fairy Tale Day! A must! I think you will agree with me. Please, click here and tell me what you think about it. ;-)
I never went to a Disney Park, but I think I will continue to prefer Efteling...

6. Rondvaart

From Rondvaart

From Rondvaart

Relaxing. A must do. One true Dutch afternoon! The swans following behind the boat, the beautiful backyards...

I like these kind of outdoor activities: rondvaarts, taking care of the achtertuin, walk on the park. It is healthier and funnier!
In Portugal, most people prefer to go to the mall. Strange behaviour in a country known as the garden of Europe...

7. Organization

Family Calendar

From Organização

Birthday Calendar

From Organização

Homeplanner

From Organização

Organization is important for me, I must say. And if it could be fun, even better! So, I like to go to Bruna and look for their agendas, home planners, birthday calendars, family calendars. Except for the agendas, I never find out the others in Portugal.

Simplicity, Organization, Outdoor Activities, Ik hou van Nederland! I love Holland!

The rules to this award are as follows:

Thank the person who gave you the award.
Paste the award on your blog.
Link the person who nominated you for the award.
Share 7 things you find beautiful in the Nederlands.
Nominate 7 bloggers or less.

Since almost the blogs that I follow were nominated by Isabella and I am new in the expatblogland , I will nominate only more two, also very good ones.

Just a Plane Ride Away

The Path Untaken

I want to thank you, Isabella, this beautiful challenge that makes us look for the positive experiences that we have been living here in the Netherlands! A positive approach is very important in this kind of challenge! ;-) Dank je wel!

Just Read It!

Hello :-)

Do you remember that I said I wanted to give you an award by Christmas time, but with the removals, my mother's visit, my studies, etc, it was not possible. I thought maybe in the 6th of January, but no. Busy times, indeed...

Presepio had already received several awards, but I always said that the first one to be shared here it would be the first one giving by Presepio.

Yesterday, Presepio received another award, very beautiful indeed, that I want to share, because of the challenge associated :-)

So, I decided to anticipate Presepio's first award, so I can answer to Isabella's challenge, without breaking my promise.

I decided also to create several awards, according with the blogs that I visit.

The first category goes to the expat blogs that I read.

These experience exchanges are very useful and very amusing to me! We are learning so much about ourselves, aren't we? :-)

It is a pleasure to read each one of your blogs. So, I want to tell others to do it too.

"Just read it!" because it's worth it!

I feel that we are growing up together in this challenge!

Thank's a lot, girls!

Selos e RSS

Um beijo ao meu marido que me apoiou desde a primeira hora e me ensinou a fazer os links, a incorporar videos e fotografias, a redimensionar estas últimas (devo dizer que ultimamente é ele que cuida desta parte);

Ao Frank, à Susy e ao Mehran que aqui deixaram sugestões sobre a música que se faz nos Países Baixos;

Gosto muito do blog do Sky :) diverte-me bastante...
